Middle Years Programme at Somers Middle School

MYP @ Somers Middle School

The Middle Years Program is different from the Somers High School Diploma Program. The MYP at Somers Middle School involves all students, all teachers, and all courses. It is inclusive and focused on every child. Our students are in a crucial period of personal, social, physical, and intellectual development. The MYP is designed to help them find a sense of belonging in this ever-changing and increasingly interrelated world and to foster their positive attitude toward learning.

The Middle Years Program (MYP) program is comprised of 8 subject areas:

  1. Language and Literature (English)
  2. Language Acquisition (World Languages)
  3. Individual and Societies (Social Studies)
  4. Sciences
  5. Math
  6. Arts (Visual and Performing)
  7. Design (Technology and Family and Consumer Sciences)
  8. Physical and Health Education

IB Philosophy

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) encourages students to become independent learners who make meaningful connections between their learning and the real world. Through inquiry and exploration of authentic issues, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

At Somers Middle School, the MYP follows all New York State and district curriculum requirements. While what students learn remains the same, the MYP strengthens how they learn through concept-based learning and the application of skills to content, supporting the New York State Portrait of a Graduate by developing thoughtful, collaborative, and adaptable learners prepared for future success.
