The Impact of Middle Years Programme at Somers Middle School

How do students learn best?

Somers Middle School students will be approaching their learning through a global lens.  Students learn best when their learning experiences have context, are connected to their lives, and the world.

Using MYP global contexts, Somers Middle School students will develop an understanding of their own humanity and shared responsibility of the planet through appropriate explorations of:

  • identities and relationships
  • personal and cultural expression
  • orientations in space and time
  • scientific and technical innovation
  • fairness and development
  • globalization and sustainability.

Concepts have a common thread across the 8 subject areas. These concepts are a method for MYP students to make connections as they inquire about issues. This inquiry can be conducted via a personal, local, or global perspective.

Each year, students in the MYP are immersed in at least 50 hours of teaching time within each subject group and engage in at least one collaboratively planned interdisciplinary unit that involves at least two subject groups.

Approaches to Learning

Approaches to learning (ATL) is the term used by the IB across all programs to describe a set of practical skills that provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the application of knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. Developing and applying these social, thinking, research, communication and self-management skills helps students learn how to learn.

Somers Middle School has developed an inclusion/special educational needs (SEN) policy that explains assessment access arrangements, classroom accommodations and differentiated instruction that meet all individual student learning needs. This policy is reflected in each teacher’s Unit Planner and learning environment.
